What is “wHole” about?

“wHole” is a stop motion short film that was created by students of Nuremberg Tech. To make a stop motion film such as ours, one has to fabricate complex, flexible puppets and to construct miniature film sets. The puppets and props are then animated in small increments, each of which make up one frame of the animation. A series of these frames shown one after the other then create the illusion of movement.

We won’t say too much about the story yet but we’ll give away this much:
the piece is a chamber drama and the protagonists are a nomad couple that live isolated in a yurt on the Eurasian Steppe.

FAQ

In how much time do you plan to finish this project?
We plan to finish this project in 2 semesters, i.e. one year. This includes the semester breaks. Half of that time is planned for pre-production (concept art, screenplay & storyboard) and the other half will be utilised to animate, composite, compose and edit to result in a film that all team members can be proud of.

Do you already have experience with stop motion films?
Many members of our team have already produced traditional 2D animations and cut-out animations. A couple of us also gained experience with puppet fabrication and set construction through internships and workshops. That said, this is actually the first time for all of us to work on our own stop motion project.

How will you finance the project?
Most film schools in Germany offer their students financial support but since we are film students of a module of the Design Faculty and not of a film school, we have to finance projects on our own. A part of our project is financed through our own pockets and the rest from the generosity of our sponsors. We have received mostly sponsorship in goods and materials.

When will the film be screened?
At the Ohm Reel Festival / Fall Collection 2014. This is the biannual film festival of our school.

What software are you using for the stop motion?

We are using Dragonframe to shoot the film and After Effects to composite the images.

UPDATE:
We stuck to our plan and finished in time (October 2014) to submit our film to the Ohm Reel Festival / Fall Collection 2014.
